2. REPORT OF FATAL LEGIONNAIRES' IN NEWBORN AFTER WATER BIRTH IN TUB

A paper entitled "A fatal newborn case of Legionella pneumophila
pneumonia occurring after water birth in a bathtub with an all day
circulating system, June 1999 - Nagoya City" (Infectious Agents
Surveillance Report 2000; 21:190-191) reports that a newborn, apparently
normal at birth, developed a fatal case of Legionnaires' disease that
investigators attribute to a birthing tub. Legionella pneumophila
serogroup 6 was found in the baby. Samples were not collected from the
tub water until two weeks after the birth. The water was heavily
contaminated with legionellae, but the species could not be identified.
